How to pray more and use your phone less: 7 simple habits

To pray more and use your phone less, what works is changing what comes first, not banning the device. These seven habits are easy to start today and work for Catholics and Protestants alike.

  1. Keep your phone out of the bedroom at night and use a regular alarm clock.
  2. Give the first words of the day to God, before looking at a screen.
  3. Find the two or three apps that steal the most time (Settings → Screen Time).
  4. Before opening those apps, say a short prayer: the Our Father, a psalm or a minute of silence.
  5. Keep screen-free times: meals, church or Mass, and the last half hour before bed.
  6. Trade the time, do not just cut it: read a psalm or the day’s Gospel instead of a few minutes of feed.
  7. Do it with someone — family, small group or prayer group — and track your streak.

Start small

Pick one habit per week. If you miss a day, start again the next, without guilt. The goal is for the pause to pray to come before your thumb reaches the feed.

Vigiai locks the apps you choose and only opens them after you pray, with prayers from your tradition in 1, 3 or 5 minutes and a 21-day journey.
