How to do a social media fast: a 21-day plan
A social media fast is a set period in which you trade time spent scrolling for prayer and Bible reading. It is not about quitting your phone; it is about choosing what comes first. This guide shows how to do one for 21 days.
Why 21 days
Twenty-one days is a common length for prayer campaigns and the Daniel fast practiced in many churches. It is long enough to notice the habit and short enough to finish.
Step by step
- Check how much time you spend on your phone today (Settings → Screen Time on iPhone).
- Pick the apps that distract you most. Usually two or three.
- Set the rule: before opening those apps, a short prayer of 1 to 5 minutes.
- Choose a fixed time for a longer prayer, ideally in the morning.
- Mark each day you keep. If you miss one, start again the next day, without guilt.
- On day 21, compare your screen time with day one.
What to pray during the pause
Catholics often pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be. Protestants often read a verse and pray in their own words: praise, surrender, gratitude and requests. What matters is that it is a real pause, not an automatic gesture.
How Vigiai helps
Vigiai enforces the rule in step 3 for you: it locks the apps you choose and only opens them after you pray, with prayers from your tradition and a 21-day journey.
